Romford Now & Then Glimpses of the Past in the Present

Romford has traditionally been identified as the site of the Roman staging post of Durolitum.   This is known only from the Antonine Itinerary (Iter IX), a collection of routes along the roads of the Roman Empire, which places the settlement between Caesaromagus (Chelmsford) and Londinium.  Unfortunately, discrepancies in the distances given in the document mean that identification of the exact site of Durolitum has long been a problem.  It has been suggested that it was located to the east of Romford, at Gidea Park or Harold Wood, or even that it lay on an alternative route between the two towns, at Little London (Chigwell).  Nonetheless, a good case has be made for locating Durolitum at Romford itself, somewhere between the river Rom and Black's Brook, possibly in the Marshalls Park area.1
