Flight Sergeant Maynard was born in Poplar, the son of Sidney Maynard, M.M. and Catherine Margaret Ann Maynard (née Cooper). He lived in Romford with his wife Mary (née Laycock), whom he'd married there in 1943.1,2

Flight Sergeant Maynard served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, as a Navigator with 83 Squadron.2 At the time of his death the squadron were flying Lancaster bombers out of Coningsby in Lincolnshire.3

Sidney Maynard is commemorated on a wooden panel inside the north wall of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Collier Row, Romford.

A wreath is laid on his grave on Norway's national day, May 17th.1
