| The church of St. John the Divine, Mawney Road, viewed from the corner of Poplar Street, May 2003. |
The church originated in 1897, when an iron mission church, in Romford parish, was opened in Willow Street. In 1928, after long delays, the first stage of the permanent church was opened on a new site in Mawney Road, and a separate parish, taken out of Romford and St. Andrew, Romford, was assigned to it.1
The church, built of brick, was designed by W. D. Caröe in Byzantine style. The first stage comprised the sanctuary, part of the chancel, and a temporary nave. In the second stage (1932) the chancel was completed and five bays of the aisled nave were built. A side chapel was added, as a war memorial, in 1948, and a choir vestry in 1966-7.1
