| Flying Officer Wilfred James Cowen, with his wife, Frances Winifred Wright Cowen, and daughter Marsha (who kindly provided this photograph, probably taken in 1944). The family lived at 73 Mawney Road. |
Flying Officer Cowen served with 97 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, as a Flight Engineer on a Lancaster bomber. He was killed on Saturday 11th November 1944, aged 32. His daughter writes:
"He was a great man who would have survived the war if he did not live according to his beliefs. His death remains a mystery except that we know he placed himself in danger to protect others. There is not a day that goes by when I do not think of him and grieve for him. It is a sadness that never goes away."
Wilfred James Cowen was the brother of Leslie Spencer Cowen. Both are commemorated with a tree planted in Raphael Park.
