The photograph was kindly provided by his step-daughter/neice, Marsha Garland, who writes:

"He drove heavy equipment for the RAF in North Africa fighting Rommel.   Although he was a pilot as well and learned how to fly through private lessons prior to the war.  Somewhat bitter that the RAF wouldn't let him fly but apparently their attitude was that they wanted to train their own pilots, not retrain privately taught pilots.  However, that quirk of fate probably saved his life."

Leslie Spencer Cowen was the brother of Flying Officer Wilfred James Cowen.  Both are commemorated with a tree planted in Raphael Park.
