Romford Now & Then Glimpses of the Past in the Present

From Ron Morris:

The COWLAND family initially came from the Maldon Essex area (unproven!), and then settled in the Noak Hill area of Romford from about 1845.  Part of the family were certain at Noak Hill through to at least 1970.  Our own section of the family - my wife's mother line - were at Noak Hill, working for the NEAVE family, until about 1890ish when they then moved to the Brentwood Road area of Romford.  We have a reasonable history of the family which of course we are only too willing to share with others, but of course there are many 'holes' which others may be able to fill.

From Paul Gale, Nepean, Ontario:

I am interested in your COWLAND links.  My grandmother was Elizabeth COWLAND born in 1835 at Ridge in Hertfordshire.  I know little about her mother, but her father was Edward COWLAND, born in South Mimms.  COWLAND are not very plentiful, and I worndered if your family linked in.  The COWLANDs came from the Bedfordshire area, I think.  At least they were established there in the largest numbers around 1830-40, and slowly spread south-east into Middx/north London, Essex, Surrey and Kent.  At least that is how it looks from an analysis of the St. Catherine's indexes.
