Romford Now & Then Glimpses of the Past in the Present

One of the first V-1s that landed in Romford hit Pettits Lane and lighted on property owned by the family of my model flying pal, Geoffrey Hopkins.  Luckily they were sheltered.  They had a conservatory at the rear of their house (at the corner of Pettits Lane and Parkland Avenue).  All the glass was shattered and anyone in the living room would have been cut to shreds.  It was quite a sight when Geoffrey invited me over a few days later to view the house.1

Geoffrey Styles, June 2001.

1 The book Hitler v Havering records that the V-1 fell in Parklands Avenue at 06:52 on 23 June 1944.  There were 3 casualties and 100 houses were damaged.
