Romford Now & Then   Glimpses of the Past in the Present

 

Alexander Black (d. 1835) was an owner of Gidea Hall, having bought it from Richard Benyon in 1802.  He and his wife Alice (1782-1871)   had two daughters, Anne (1815-1892) and Adelaide.  Anne married William Neave, and Adelaide married Alfred Douglas Hamilton.1,2

The lake in Raphael Park, which once formed part of the Gidea Hall estate, was known as Black's Canal, and the road bridge over the canal as Black's Bridge.
