The letter reads:

17 Jany 1823

Sir

Upon my return home his day from the Quarter Sessions I found your letter respecting the situation of Barracks Master at Romford, and it is with much regret that I am compelled to decline interfering in this business, because I am wholly unknown to the Duke of Wellington, and indeed if I were differently circumstanced, I should not think myself entitled as a Member of Parliament to apply for patronage to which I have not the slightest claim.
