The letter reads:

[continued from side 1] ... Secretary to the Treasury, had he been a personal friend of mine I would not have hesitated to have requested his good offices in your favour under the distressing circumstances in which you are placed.

Lamenting that I am so situated as not to be enabled to serve you.
