With its bronze- and copper- coloured bands it looks quite striking in the late Autumn sunlight.

Romford's first gas works, in Hornchurch Lane (South Street), were established in 1825 by George M. Bell. These were taken over in 1847 by the newly-formed Romford Gas & Coke Company, with Bell remaining as manager. New works in Nursery Walk (just to the north of the current buildings) were opened in 1892. Rebuilding and enlargement of these works was begun in 1947.1
