Plan of the Coach & Bell Inn and Premises, High Street. Freehold of the late Mr Carter coloured Pink. Leasehold, Brome's Estate coloured Green. Leasehold, Rowley's Estate coloured Buff. E C Allam Surveyor Romford. C19th. |
Leaving High Street you pass through a passageway with the main Inn building on the right and a Spirit Store on the left. Once through the passageway there is a Warehouse on your left, with a roughly triangular yard opening out to the right. On the left-hand side of the yard, beyond the Warehouse, there is a Market Room, then two 8 Stall Stables, with another Stable and a Dung Yard behind them.
To the right of the farthest stable, at the far corner of the yard, there is another passageway, leading through to a garden. Entering into the garden there is a Hen House to your right and a Shed to your left, and at the opposite end there is a Summer House. A small bridge from the Summer House crosses a triburary of the River Rom, which itself runs down the right-hard side of the garden.
Returning to the yard through the passageway, with the 8 Stall Stable to your right, there is another Stable on your left. Next to this is a Harness Room, then a Coach House, Open Shed and Loft, Pot House, Coal Cellar and Reserve Warehouse. In the far corner of the yard there is a Bottle Store. The main Inn building is straight ahead of you, on the far side of the yard, and to its right is the passageway that takes you back into High Street.
