The White Hart was recorded as early as 1489. The building here was demolished in 1896.3
The yard could accommodate several stage coaches that travelled the great Essex road between London and towns in East Anglia - the road through the High Street was then the chief route to the eastern counties of England.3 For example, in 1848 an omnibus left the White Hart for London at 9.00am and 3.30pm daily.4
