| The VE Day street party in Crichton Gardens in May 1945. It was kindly provided by Roy Woolley, who is pictured 3rd from the left in the front row, with his brother to his left. He writes: |
Crichton Gardens was the Dagenham end of Crow Lane, where there are 1930s houses on both sides of the road until the Dagenham border. It was all called Crow Lane and renumbered I think in the 60s. Crow Lane was a narrow winding road with ditches and large areas of gravel alongside the road where the houses were further apart. We had a small patch of grass opposite us with an oak tree and the "pig bin" where we communally put all food waste.
The party was very well organised by somebody. All the boys had red, white and blue feather buttonholes and the girls had headbands of the same. We had a conjurer and I recall water pouring from my elbow when my brother pumped my other arm!
Roy Woolley has also written of his memories growing up during the war.
