The old cemetery was opened in 1849 on a site originally intended for a new parish church.  This soon became full, and in 1871 Romford burial board opened a new cemetery in Crow Lane, Rush Green.1

In 1953 the chapel was demolished and the cemetery laid out as Coronation Gardens.1
