| The north-east side of Market Place on a market day sometime in the late 1960s.1 |
At the near end is C&A, and just up from that the Rumford Shopping Hall. Between these two buildings St. Edward's Roman Catholic church can be seen through the trees. Next to the Shopping Hall is an open space surrounded by hoardings, on which Rumford Chambers (an extension to the Shopping Hall) would later be built. After this comes the Pig in the Pound public house, and then another open area, with the new Central Library behind it. The last building on this side of the market housed the market superintendant's office,2 and to its right, at the head of the market, part of the old Laurie cinema can be seen.
