Romford Now & Then Glimpses of the Past in the Present

A sign on the large building to the right proclaims it to be the Romford Recorder Printing Works, although it was originally a Congregational chapel, built in 1823, and sold when a new building was erected in South Street in 1877.2

The large cart looks like a travelling hardware shop, whilst the smaller cart to its right may be delivering coal (as there appears to be a pile of coal on the pavement behind it).  Notice also the timber-clad buildings.

I believe that this photograph was taken from somewhere around the western end of Church Lane (modern St Edward's Way).   The trees in the background would be on the Mashalls estate.
