Built at the beginning of George V's reign, it replaced the previous post office at the top end of South Street, near the National Westminster Bank. Before that it was located at various sites in the Market Place, High Street, and South Street.2 It has now been moved yet again, this time to Laurie Walk.
The smart motor car in the photograph may belong to Dr Alfred Wright, who was still living at 44 South Street, one of the two houses later demolished to make way for the shops beyond the post office.1
The post office building has now been converted into Brannigans bar. Step forward in time to see this same view in January 2000.
