The view from the railway station embankment, looking north along South Street, sometime around 1860 onwards.1

In the centre of the picture is The Star Inn, and behind and to its left the buildings and smoking chimneys of the Ind Coope brewery.  A little farther up South Street, on the opposite side of the road, stands the county court, and in the distance the spire of St Edward's church can be seen.
