On the near side of the road the two closest shops are James Walker (Jewellers) and Halfords.  Further up, the approaching bus is just passing the entrance to Western Road.

On the opposite side of the road the main building is the original Romford shopping arcade.  A large advertisment declares it to be the home of Craddocks, "Romford's Gift Store", whilst a sign on the front shows that it also houses Wells Music Stores.

The railings leading up to the arcade stand in front of the late-Victorian police station, part of which can be seen at the edge of the photograph.  Above the arcade the tip of the Congregational church spire can just be seen, whilst beyond it is the old post office.
