Romford Now & Then Glimpses of the Past in the Present

The following is the text of a stone commemorating the opening of the Charity School building, Market Place, in 1728:

THE CHARITY SCHOOL FOR
HORNCHURCH, ROMFORD
AND HAVERING.
ANNO DOMINI MDCCXXVIII.
Goe and doe thou likewise.
St. Luke ye. 10th. & 37th. verse.

The Charity School was the forerunner of the St. Edward's Church of England schools.  The commemoration stone is now built into a wall in the foyer of the primary school between two statuettes which once stood in niches on the old school building.1

1 Text noted by kind permission of the headmaster, February 2000.
