Romford Now & Then Glimpses of the Past in the Present

Memories of "The Huts" in Western Road when they were used as classrooms for the infants of St. Edward's C of E school:

From Peter G Underwood:

The smell of damp raincoats always takes my memory back to "The Huts" and the sound of popping gas fires. They consisted of two buildings, end to end, with the lowest infants class in the front building and the senior in the one behind. Our playground was the extensive grassy area, with some scrubby trees, in front of the YMCA, which was set well back from the road and surrounded by a set of high iron railings. Years of infant shoes dragging in the dust had worn paths through the grass and we would play "trains" around this area.

The YMCA was a rather forbidding building which I only entered twice: every year "The Huts" were used as an overflow sorting office for the Christmas mail and the infants school took up temporary residence in the YMCA in a vast (or so it seemed) room. There was some benefit to this arrangement because the YMCA was marginally better heated and a trip to the "bogs" was not the icy experience regularly endured by the needy of The Huts!

From Peter Green:

I remember that between the huts and the fence (on the left in the picture) was a miniature railway track - you know the sort of thing, where you sit astride the carriages - but I never saw it in action.  In front of the hall was a grass area with a triangle, the border of which was about 12 to 18 inches wide, with no grass, to represent the 'Red Triangle' of the YMCA.  I played "trains" on this triangle. The teachers that were there when I was were Miss Palmer, Miss Bailey and Mrs Cakebread.
