According to the writing on the equipment box the business was established in 1837 and traded from 11 London Road.

A sad postscript is that the Romford War Memorial records the death in the First World War of Charles Cumberland, son of James Cumberland of 11 London Road. Charles had by that time emigrated to Canada and settled in Ontario,2 but perhaps it might even be him on the motor bike, photographed before he left for a new life?
