I can remember my Dad, who was in the ARP, catching the bus one evening to get fish & chips from the shop at Collier Row, and returning bruised and bedraggled, having stopped in Lynwood Drive to extinguish, with the help of the bus driver, an incendiary bomb. I can picture him to this day, staggering through the front door, clutching a soggy mass of newspaper, squashed potato, and batter in one hand, and the charred bomb case in the other. I think we were more concerned with the ruination of our supper than his ordeal - poor old Dad! The bomb case was a cylinder, about 6ins in length, and 2ins in diameter, with fins running down the side. [This was probably the tail end of the bomb.] It was eventually painted, and used for many years after as a flower vase. Mum seemed to paint it a different colour every year, and I assume it was sealed a one end to enable the flowers to be watered.
