Romford Now & Then Glimpses of the Past in the Present

One day during the latter part of 1940 (I think it was) a pal said, "Did you know that a parachute mine is hanging in the trees in Birkbeck Road, and shall we go to see if we can get some of the silk from the chute".  At that time my interpretation of a mine was of a round object with horns sticking out at various angles and if one of the horns was touched then the thing would explode, so not wishing to be blown up I 'chickened out'.  It was not until years later that I found out the mines were cylindrical in shape and not like the sea mines I had associated them with.  A day or two afterwards the same mate proudly produced a length of green silk cord, saying that it was from the parachute.  I had my doubts though, because as I discovered later, around a thousand people were evacuated from the vicinity of the mine, until it had been made safe.
