On the 13th June 1944 the first of the V-1 'flying bombs' ('doodlebugs') were launched on London. It must have been one of these that I and my family saw passing overhead during that night. Not having experienced these things, and the unusual noise it was making, assumed it was a German aircraft on fire. The feelings were "serves you right - how do you like some of your own medicine for a change" and thinking that at last the anti-aircraft guns had the measure of them. The media during the war years very seldom told the public the bad news, only 'propaganda' good news, but apparently were obliged to announce over the radio the next day that we were being attacked by pilotless aircraft.
